Some people are just too quick to accuse…

Getting accused of being a thief is never nice, but what really irritates me is how willing some people are to fire off accusations in a public forum without taking any steps to verify their information.

Someone has looked at the login sequence for Maiden Desmodus and the posts of sample mud output on the forum and concluded that the game is so similar to another that we must have stolen the code.

If this individual had bothered to contact me first with their concerns I’d have been happy to show them the test server and demonstrate that the codebase we are using is exactly what we claim it is – an original work based on Nakedmud.

We have made no secret of this and infact Nakedmud is credited on both the game server and website, despite the fact that this attribution is not required by the license. It’s a great piece of code to build upon and I am happy to give credit where it is due. All the more reason why I find these kinds of accusations hurtful.

The similarities with the SOI codebase are purely cosmetic and unsurprising given that my partner Wade has an extensive background on RPI muds. We are not attempting to create an RPI mud or to emulate the SOI codebase, however it is perfectly reasonable to want to include familiar features where we believe they would improve the game.

I just really wish people would take more care before making such potentially damaging accusations in public.
